Spring 2008

African Daisy

Spring is a great time to get into the garden and get ready for the hot Summer to come. There are lots of choices to brighten up your garden after the winter. Many annuals are available now - petunias, portulaca, salvia, alyssum and marigolds - which will colour your garden throughout the Summer. Plant them amongst your shrubs or in a pot to give your garden that special Spring look.

Now is the time to prune & fertilise your garden. Shrubs that have been pruned need the extra nutrients to put on that spurt of growth. Lawns can be fertilized after the winter dry.

'Frangipani'

It's been a short Spring and Summer is already on the way. The Evergreen Frangipanis have arrived and are looking good. Some deciduous varieties are available with many more colours to follow. Frangipanis are great performers in our Subtropical climate and require little attention once established.

Bromeliads

If you have a shady garden, why not grow some Bromeliads? Many are in flower now - and that's the best time to buy - you can choose the colours you like! Bromeliads are best grown on logs, tree branches or rocks or in the ground in a very open mix so ask at the nursery for our recommendations

Stromanthe 'Superstar'

Indoor plants are also great for that tropical effect and can brighten up your living areas. Lush greens or vibrant colours, there are many varieties to choose from - palms, spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), stromanthe (pictured), ficus, aglonaema - to name just a few. Most are suitable for shady outdoor living areas - try some in bright coloured pots or hanging baskets.

Dwarf Lemon

Spring is a great time to plant fruit trees. They can be planted in the ground in a sunny spot or in large pots. There is a range of smaller growing varieties suitable for pot culture. Grapes are now available. They make a great pergola cover for the summer and are deciduous during winter to let the sun in.

There are a few Heliconias still available - Red Christmas and Parrot's Beak - with lots of new varieties expected in the next few weeks.
